EndNote Online

EndNote has an online version in addition to the desktop version. 

EndNote Online has similar, but more restricted, functionality to the desktop version.

Why use EndNote Online?

  • Web-based - can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection
  • Can sync with your desktop library
  • Allows collaborative sharing of libraries
  • Can contain unlimited number of references and attachments

Limitations:

  • use term lists for journal abbreviations
  • edit or add styles, filters and connections 
  • preview the citation for a record in a chosen style

Windows Plug-in Requirements

  • Microsoft® Internet Explorer 7.x - 9.x with the latest service pack set as the default Web browser

  • Macintosh® OS X 10.6 or later
  • Microsoft® Word 2008 SP1 / 2011
  • Firefox® for Macintosh® set as the default Web browser

Register your account

To set up an EndNote online account:

  • Open your EndNote library
  • Choose the 'Sync Library' icon from the tool bar   Syn icon for Windows version (Windows)  Syn icon for Mac version (Mac)
  • You will be prompted to login or register for an account

 

Sign up for a free account

  • On campus: Go to EndNote Web and click on Sign Up, then follow the prompts.
  • Off-campus: From the Library's Research Guides pages enter Web of Knowledge. Select EndNote  at the top of the page or under tools and click on Register.

Inserting references into Word

No software has to be installed to use EndNote Web however you will need to install a Cite While You Write toolbar if you want to insert references into a Word document or use the capture toolbar in your browser.

After creating an account, signing in and viewing the 'Getting started' guide, select the "Download installers link at the bottom of the page".

  • EndNote X users: with the latest update you do not need to install the Cite While You Write Plug-In to use it. 
  • EndNote X3 or X4 users: you will automatically have EndNote Web CWYR plug-ins.
  • If you are using EndNote and EndNote web it is advisable to use the EndNote toolbar in Word and switch between EndNote & EndNote Web using Preferences option.
    • Instruction for Word 2007 users: 
      • Do not install Site While You Write Plug-In.
      • Go to EndNote toolbar and select “Preferences”. 
      • Click on “Application” and then select “EndNote Web” from drop down menu
      • Type in your e-mail address and the password. 
      • Click on “OK”  the toolbar will automatically switch to EndNote Web.

Cite While You Write plug-in

CWYW plug-in connects EndNote and Word and enables you to cite while you write in Word.

  • If you have already installed a desktop version of the EndNote software, you don't need to download the Cite While You Write plug-in.
  • If you use EndNote Online without EndNote desktop, or EndNote Basic only, you should install this plug-in.

Capture plug-ins

  • The Capture bookmarklet creates references for websites and other web-based sources that don't have an in-built direct export option
