Guide to searching Embase, a biomedical database focused on drugs and pharmacology, medical devices, clinical medicine, and basic sciences relevant to clinical medicine.

Create an Elsevier Account

To use all Embase features—especially bulk exporting citations, saving searches, or creating alerts—you must be signed in with a free Elsevier account.
You can search without an account, but exporting and saving require a login.

Step 1: Access Embase Through Your Library

  1. Go to your Library Website.
  2. Open the A-Z Databases.
  3. Select Embase from the A–Z list.
  4. If off campus, log in with your RCSI username and password to authenticate library access.
  5. You will now be redirected to the Embase homepage.

Step 2: Open the Elsevier Sign-In Menu

  1. Look at the top right corner of the Embase screen.
  2. Click “Sign in”.
  3. A pop-up box will appear with:
    • Email / Password login
    • A link that says “Create account” (for new users)

Step 3: Create Your Elsevier Account (If You Don’t Have One)

If this is your first time:

  1. Click “Create account” under the sign-in box.
  2. Fill in the required details:
    • First Name (Given name)
    • Last Name (Family name)
    • Email address (institutional email recommended)
    • Password (must meet Elsevier’s security requirements)
  3. Agree to the terms and conditions.
  4. Click Register.

What Happens Next?

  • You will receive a verification email from Elsevier.
  • Open the email and click “Verify Email”.
  • Once verified, you will be automatically logged in to your new Elsevier account in Embase.

Step 4: Sign In to Your Elsevier Account (For Returning Users)

If you already have an account:

  1. Return to Embase via the library website.
  2. Click Sign in (top right).
  3. Enter your Elsevier email address and password.
  4. Click Sign in.

You are now logged in and can use all personalization features.

Step 5: Check You Are Logged In

After signing in:

  • Your name or initials will appear in the top right corner.
  • The Export options will now be fully available.
  • You can save searches, create alerts, and use search history.

Step 6: Exporting Citations (Why Login Is Needed)

Once you are signed in:

  1. Run a search in Embase.
  2. Select the records you want to export.
  3. The Export button will now work normally.
  4. Choose your export format:
    • RIS
    • EndNote
    • CSV
    • Excel, etc.
