EMBASE

Guide to searching Embase, a biomedical database focused on drugs and pharmacology, medical devices, clinical medicine, and basic sciences relevant to clinical medicine.

Search Options in Embase

Embase has a variety of search options. You can access all of the search types by selecting "Search" in the top bar, then the search type of interest in the search options bar.

Each type is suited for different applications:

  • Quick Search is designed for performing quick and easy searches using keywords and phrases. Simply type in a word or phrase and select "Show # Results."
  • PICO Search is meant to help you create a search based on the PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Study Design) framework.
  • PV Wizard is a search builder in Embase designed to help you construct pharmacovigilance search strategies successfully.
  • Medical Device is a stepwise framework for building complex medical device searches.
  • Advanced Search allows you to limit your search to a more specific set of results. For example, you can limit your search to a specific range of years or focus on particular subject areas.
  • Drug Search has the option "Drug fields," which lists the field codes specific to drug searches, and "Drug subheadings," which contains limits such as "Adverse drug reaction" and "Drug concentration." You can add these subheadings to focus your search on particular aspects of the available drug information. The Drug Search form also includes an option called "Routes," which contains subheadings for every route of administration for drugs.
  • Disease Search offers the option "Disease subheadings," which includes a selection of subheadings applicable to diseases in general. This is not a list of diseases or disease families, but rather a set of terms that most frequently come up in association with disease information searches, such as "Complication," "Disease management," and "Side effect."
  • Device Search offers two options: "Device fields," which lists field codes specific to medical device searches, and "Device subheadings," which contain a selection of subheadings applicable to medical devices.
  • Citation Information helps you track down articles based on author, article, or journal information.
  • Query Translator allows you to input a PubMed search query, and Embase will translate the search to Embase terms

Use Filters to Focus the Search

Use the filter options available in the left sidebar of the search results page to narrow and focus your search.

Embase offers many Results Filters you can use to focus your search results on the most useful or important citations. To add one or more filters, click on the category, select the filter option(s) you want, then click Apply.

Sources: This filter indicates which results are available in MEDLINE (also accessible via PubMed through NLM) and which are unique to Embase.

Drugs: This filter allows you to limit by specific drug aspects and options. For instance, with the Naproxen search, the drug filter options include limiting to only studies with a placebo and limiting to studies that include a specific comparison intervention (e.g., ibuprofen or paracetamol).

Diseases: This filter lets you limit the search by a specific disease or condition, which might be the condition your intervention of interest is treating or an adverse effect or outcome.

Devices: This filter limits the search to only studies that include a specific medical device.

Floating Subheadings: This filter narrows a search that includes a subject heading to only search one or more aspects of that subject heading, such as only Adverse Drug Reactions with Naproxen.

Age and Gender: These filters both let you specify aspects of studies' populations in your search results and limit to, for example, only studies looking at children or women.

Study Types: This filter limits your search results by type of research study methodology.

Publication Types: This filter limits your search to specific types of publications, such as articles or conference papers.

Authors: This filter displays the authors with the most publications in your search and allows you to filter by one or more of them.

Conference Abstracts: This filter lists the conference names associated with the most publications in your search and lets you filter by one or more of them.

Drug Trade Names & Drug Manufacturers: These filters limit your search by a specific drug name or company.

Device Trade Names & Device Manufacturers: Similarly, these filters limit your search by a specific medical device name or company.
