EndNote 21 for Mac

An EndNote tab should display in MS Word 2016:

If it is not visible, please try the following steps:

1. Make sure Word is closed
2. Open EndNote and select the EndNote 21 Menu 
3. Select Customizer
4. Under Component list, tick the box beside Cite While You Write addin for Microsoft Word and Click Next
5. Click Next
6. Click Done 

1. Go into the Apple menu

2. Click System Preferences/Settings

3. Click Security & Privacy

4. Click the Privacy tab (along the top)

5. Click the Automation options, along the left.

6. Here, make sure that both "Microsoft Word" and "EndNote 21" are both turned on - see the screenshot below, you can search for Automation as an alternative to steps 4 and 5. 

7. Open Microsoft Word to confirm the error message does not occur.

To insert a Reference using Word

• Place your mouse cursor at a point in the text where you would like to insert a citation
• Click on Insert Selected Citation
• Search for a reference (use the author or a keyword from the title)
• Click on Insert

How to edit the Citation

• • To edit a citation, click on the citation in your Word document.
  • In the EndNote tab, click on Edit & Manage Citation(s).

• • In the dialog box, you can add page numbers, exclude the author or year, and more. Make the desired changes and click OK.
  • How to generate the Bibliography
• • As you insert citations, EndNote will automatically generate a bibliography at the end of your document.
  • Ensure the bibliography is formatted according to the selected citation style.
  • You can change the citation style at any point by selecting a new style from the style dropdown menu and clicking Update Citations and Bibliography.

• To remove a citation, click on the citation
• Select Edit & Manage Citation(s)
• Click on the drop down list to the right of the citation
• Click on Remove Citation
• Click OK
