What is Eigen Factor?

EigenFactor is the ranking based on incoming citations for a journal with more weight given to citations from significant and larger journals.

Journal Citation Reports (InCites JCR)

A tool for evaluating and comparing journals. Metrics include journal impact factor, eigenfactor, and more. Citation data drawn from approximately 12,000 scholarly and technical journals and conference proceedings from more than 3,300 publishers in over 60 countries. JCR is a leading source of citation data on journals in the areas of science, technology, and social sciences. JCR includes data from Science Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index in the Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics, formerly Thomson Reuters).

Eigenfactor Journal Rankings
Started as an academic research project at the University of Washington in 2007 to evaluate the importance of each journal. Journal rankings are based on a network of citations instead of purely local citation information. Journals are rated according to the number of incoming citations, where citations from highly-ranked journals are weighted more than lower-ranked journals. Eigenfactor measures article influence scores based on 5-year citation data and adjusts citation differences across disciplines. Powered by Thomson Reuter's Web of Science citation data.

Eigen Factor Vs Impact Factor

Like the Impact Factor, the Eigenfactor Score is essentially a ratio of number of citations to total number of articles. However, unlike the Impact Factor, the Eigenfactor Score:

Counts citations to journals in both the sciences and social sciences.
Eliminates self-citations. Every reference from one article in a journal to another article from the same journal is discounted.
Weights each reference according to a stochastic measure of the amount of time researchers spend reading the journal.

Eigenfactor scores are scaled so that the sum of the Eigenfactor scores of all journals listed in Thomson's Journal Citation Reports (JCR) is 100.

The Eigenfactor uses Thomson Reuters Web of Science citation data.
